How do you repair heritage brickwork structures?
This is an important question for Ottawa, especially as the multi-million restoration work on Parliament Hill continues.
The Construction Specifications Canada Ottawa chapter has invited Dr Gerard Lynch, described as “an internationally acclaimed and highly respected historic brickwork consultant, master bricklayer, educator and author” to provide a comprehensive two-day program on April 24 and 25.
In the first day, Dr. Lynch will discuss binders in historic mortars, and in the second day, he will explain about historic forms of jointing and pointing.
Dr.Lynch, based in the U.K., followed a traditional bricklayer apprenticeship and, over the years, “through his natural ability within his craft, gained many award, including theSilver and Gold Trowels from the Brick Development Association and is a Licentiate of the City and Guilds of London Institute (LGC),” his biography says. “he is a former head lecturer of Trowel Trades at Bedford College, pioneering a revival of gauged brickwork, in which he is considered the world’s leading authority, and other almost-forgotten traditional craft skills; and is affectionately known by the historic term, ‘The Red Mason.”
The program, sponsored by the Ontario Regional Masonry Contractors Association and Merkley Supply Ltd., will be held at 440 Albert St. Participants can register for one-day sessions at $350, or attend both days for $500.00.
