A newly-renovated Rehabilitation Kitchen at the Royal Ottawa Hospital is ready, so patients can get cooking while they continue to heal.
The kitchen was designed, supplied and installed by Astro Design Centre as a place where patients can not only cook, but gather, share stories and continue their healing journeys.
Marina Medina, an interior designer with Astro for the past two years, worked alongside the kitchen’s main designer, Walter Bunda. Technical drawings came from the creative talents of Caitlin Porter.
“The rest of the Astro team was involved in some capacity in brainstorming the concept, creating and double checking the drawings and ordering the product,” Medina said.
As Astro celebrated 20 years of business, the team wanted to give back to the community to show their appreciation. When the opportunity came to donate a new kitchen to The Royal, they couldn’t pass it up.
“We wanted to create a space that was functional for group activities,” Marina said. “To achieve this, we created a spacious kitchen with a larger countertop and doubles of most of the appliances, including two large workstation sinks to enable many people to comfortably cook all at the same time.”
“Conceptually, we wanted the space to be beautiful, calm, aesthetically pleasing and uplifting.”
The Astro design team was hard at work for eight months creating the new kitchen with construction taking about two months.
With the help of its suppliers and support from the Royal Ottawa Hospital, Astro was able to make this all happen to create a beautiful new space for clients to enjoy cooking, learning and for gathering together as a team.
Medina said the Astro team looks forward to seeing the positive impact this bright and fun kitchen will have on many clients for years to come.
