On Feb. 7, Jason Walker, chief estimator of EllisDon (Ottawa office), returned from a mission to Haiti- with experts from six related businesses- after having constructed a trades facility for local residents.
Following a fundraising campaign that raised $60,000 to finance construction, accommodations and equipment, Walker worked with Empower Global Inc., a Canadian-registered local charity, to oversee on-site construction during the project.
The Haiti Training Facility for Tradesfacility –constructed in tandem with Covertite Roofing, Walters Inc., Harris Rebar, Bellai Brothers, Birnie Electric, Roth Construction Ottawa, and Modern Niagara– will now host much-needed welding, automotive and woodworking workshops for a very appreciative community.
The team worked daily on tasks that included the installation of two 80 x 30 foot roofs, an in-house water-pressure system, electrical power and lighting distribution, and playground equipment, among other efforts. Many of the locals were impressed with the team’s commitment to complete the project- with little-to-no modern technology- in only eleven days.
