PCL Construction is hosting an interactive Try-a-Trade opportunity for youth at the 2014 Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) in Toronto.
On June 5 and 6, PCL representatives with varying trade backgrounds guided participants safely through a full task cycle involving virtual construction and hands-on activities, the company said in a statement.
Working on a modular mock-up, students will review a Building Information Model (BIM), participate in a pre-job safety inspection, and then try their hand at drywall, plumbing, and electrical tasks, making the connection between trade skills and leading construction concepts and technologies.
“At PCL, we believe in supporting skilled trade development throughout the country,” stated David Filipchuk, president and COO, PCL Canadian and Australian Operations. “Our Try-a-Trade activity is a great way to generate excitement for the careers available in skilled trades going forward, and it showcases how PCL integrates leading-edge technology into field construction practices.”
PCL’s partnership with the 2014 SCNC marks the first year of a five-year sponsorship commitment that will see PCL contribute $15,000 in annual support to the event. PCL was also an official sponsor of the 2012 event in Edmonton and the 2013 event in Vancouver.
Skills Canada is a national, not-for-profit organization that works with employers, educators, labor groups, and governments to promote skilled trades and technology careers among Canadian youth.
