Ottawa’s construction community will soon apply pedal power to help raise millions of dollars for cancer research at The Ottawa Hospital.

The Ride (formerly known as Ride the Rideau) has received – since its inception five years ago – leadership support from this city’s residential and commercial construction community, and early fundraising results indicate the trend will continue.

As of June 29, the top five fundraising teams for the event are all from the AEC community. The funds listed here – totaling more than $240,000 – will be only a fraction of the total contributions, as most people contribute closer to the Sept. 13 ride date. (Overall, the annual event has raised more than $8.8 million.)

The Brick Peddlers (Merkley Supply Ltd.)     $122,722.85

Tomlinson Red Army  $92,070.00

Taggart Gear Crew      $31,437.88

Boone Flushers            $24,339.00

Team Tartan $21,510.00

The Valecraft Velocity            $16,710.80

This year’s route has been changed after the tragic death of participant Laurie Strano last year, and the Sunday, Sept. 13 event will offer two distinct routes

  • A 50km closed route looping the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway.
  • A separate 108km open route starting at Tunney’s Pasture and taking participants west to the Dunrobin area then back to Wesley Clover Parks. Riders will then be shuttled back to Tunney’s Pasture for the closing celebration.

Undoubtedly, if you are not yourself on bicycle on Sept. 13, you’ll receive fundraising support inquiries from clients, suppliers, and colleagues within the industry. You can learn more and contribute to The Ride at www.dotheride.ca.
