A career development opportunity, free dinner and Sens hockey link two upcoming Construction Specifications Canada (CSC) Ottawa chapter events.

The CSC chapter is co-ordinating a special career event at Algonquin College’s Centre for Construction Excellence (ACCE) on Oct. 15 to introduce students and individuals already working in the architectural, engineering and construction community to the CSC’s specifications writing certification program.

Qualified specifications writers are in high-demand at architectural and engineering practices, and among building and product manufacturers seeking to influence the course of upcoming building decisions. Specifications understanding is also vital for contractors and sub-trades, both to estimate projects properly and discern opportunities to enhance job site efficiency.

The CSC certification program, which starts with introductory weekend scheduled courses on the Principles of Construction Documentation, allows options for specialization, ultimately leading to the Registered Specifications Writer (RSW) designation.

“At the Algonquin career evening, we’ll introduce students to successful graduates and employers, who will explain how specification writing certification can greatly enhance your career,” said Allan Johnston, the CSC Ottawa chapter’s educational program co-ordinator. “This is a great opportunity to learn more if you are currently a student in one of the construction technology and tradesprograms, but is also really useful if you are already in the industry and wish to enhance and improve your career prospects.”

The event, from 5:30 to 7:30 in ACCE Room CA105, includes a light dinner and the opportunity to win a couple of tickets to the next CSC Ottawa event – an evening with the Sens, for the Philadelphia/Ottawa game on Nov. 12.

“We’ve arranged with the Sens to use the fourth-level party suite, and the evening includes a meal from the Ledge,” says Mark Buckshon, the CSC Ottawa chapter chair and president of the Construction News and Report Group of Companies, which publishes Ottawa Construction News.  “There’ll be plenty of time for networking and communication, and of course, the satisfaction of seeing the Sens win.”

Sponsorship packages are available from $250 to $975, with tickets, recognition, and additional perks.
