Ottawa’s engineers and contractors laced up their skates and hit the ice at the Bell Sensplex February 5 and 6 for the 16th annual Stantec Charity Hockey Tournament. The tournament operates on a “zero-profit” basis with all revenues going to the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa in support of Camp Smitty, with an expected overall contribution of more than $20,000.
“This tournament is two days, 32 teams, zero profit and one big winner – Camp Smitty,” says Maurice Leger, senior vice-president at Stantec for Canada east, and a tournament participant.“At Stantec, our promise is to design with community in mind. We can’t think of a better way to help support the community than to bolster an amazing resource for underprivileged children like Camp Smitty.”
The 2013 tournament raised $22,000.00 in cash contributions from registrations, raffles, and generous sponsors. This year’s tournament is on track to match that amount, a Stantec spokesperson said.
Final division scores were:
PCL Division: Metcalfe Realty 2-0 Goldie Mohr
Stantec Division : Stantec A 1- 0 Karson Group
Maxxam Division: Halsall 5 -2 Expercom
Soprema Division: Soprema 6 – 2 Pomerleau
Other teams participating included Tomlinson, Tamarack, Mattamy, Minto, Valecraft, Modern Niagara, and, of course, from Stantec’s own Ottawa office.
Stantec has worked with the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa for eight years and raises funds in support of Camp Smitty through the annual hockey tournament and other initiatives, such as a staff day of volunteering at the camp held in September 2013 for Stantec in the Community Day, the Stantec news release said.
Camp Smitty is named for Brian Smith, a CTV Ottawa sportscaster and former NHL hockey player, to commemorate his contributions to the Ottawa community. Brian was killed in 1995. He attended the camp (then called Camp Minwassin) as a thirteen-year-old and later as a counselor.
