Three members of the Construction Specifications Canada (CSC) Ottawa chapter received special recognition awards at the association’s national convention in Calgary in May.
Tom Dunbar, a specifications writer who worked for the federal government co-ordinating the National Master Specifications before starting his own private specifications writing business, received the association’s lifetime membership award, based on his years of service to the association.
He, like heritage consultant and engineer John Cooke, has previously been a national president of the association, with almost 2,000 members in chapters in most major Canadian cities. Cooke, meanwhile, won the program director’s award for his outstanding to the association’s technical studies committee, 2012-13 term.
Finally, Karen Martinson, the Canadian Roofing Contractors’ Association (CRCA)’s technical manager, received the Ottawa Chapter Award of Merit.
Mark Buckshon, president of the Construction News and Report of Companies which publishes the Ottawa Construction News, became the Ottawa CSC chapter chair at the local chapter’s annual chapter meeting earlier in the month.
“My goal this year is to increase the community’s awareness of the value of CSC educational designations, and the incredible career opportunities for individuals with specification writing qualifications,” he said.
“We’ll be developing some programs and initiatives to showcase the opportunities. Undoubtedly, some of the industry’s greatest challenges occur when the initial contract documentation is less-than-perfect; conversely, when the specifications are in order, projects move forward smoothly and within budget.”
