The Ottawa Construction News – March 2014 – PAGE C5 Richmond Home Hardware Building Centre attracts and retains contractor clients with competitive prices and business-focused service STAFF WRITER – The Ottawa Construction News Special Feature Richmond Home Hardware Building Centre reports that it attracts 70 per cent of its business from the contractor market, an indication that it combines competitive pric- ing with contractor-focused service. President Doug Kazda says the building centre's competitive pricing attracts clients but the service causes them to return. “I’m in the store a lot and always accessible to deal with questions or special requests,” he said. “My staff is experienced in the build- ing industry and brings their own expertise and experience to the offering.” The enterprise started as a relatively modest Home Hardware store in 1998. Kazda realized he needed to expand. Eight years ago the company relocated to a three- acre property, built a 7,000 sq. ft store and became the Home Building Centre it is today. He decided to focus on the contractor market. “My dad owned a home building store in Carp so construction was what I was drawn to,” he said. That and the staff I had with experience in construction made this a natural progression.” Kazda says the company works with a long list of long-term clients including deck and fence builders and home builders. He says services include delivery and di- rect ordering from wholesalers. “As a smaller company we have the ability to make things happen. Someone needs a de- livery asap - we can adjust our schedule to make it happen. Someone needs a large order of material - we can order and have it shipped directly from our wholesaler quickly,” he says. He says he also sources unique materials from among his large group of suppliers. The location carries a full line of lumber including spruce, pressure treated and cedar, composite decking, interior doors and trim and custom orders windows and doors. There also is a complete contractor tool se- lection. The affiliated Richmond Home Hard- ware Design Centre just down the road has a flooring department that supplies and in- stalls hardwood, carpet, laminate, tile and vinyl options. The company stocks paint, including an eco-friendly line, outdoor equipment from chainsaws to riding mowers to barbeques, as well as several lines of kitchen and bath ac- cessories for retail clients.
